At Chatsworth Garage Doors we offer garage door repairs across Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield. Here are our tips on how to recognise worn springs.
If your garage door isn’t opening and closing as smoothly as it used to, it could be the springs. Well-performing springs can make all the difference between garage doors that operate smoothly and those that don’t. This is because the springs counterbalance the weight of the door, helping you open and close it without too much effort. If your garage door is rather elderly, it’s worth looking at whether the springs have worn.
There are essentially two types of spring: torsion springs and extension springs. Torsion springs are fitted above the garage door and are usually to be found on sectional garage doors. They work by winding and unwinding to raise and lower the door. Extension springs, on the other hand, are mounted on either side of the door and they stretch and contract to take the weight of the door. You’ll usually find extension springs on single-garage doors.
So what are the typical signs of wear and tear? We have extensive experience of conducting garage door repairs for homeowners throughout Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield, so here are a few of our technicians’ tips on diagnosing typical door faults.
First of all, examine your garage door springs for signs of corrosion or fraying, which could indicate that the springs need to be replaced. If your garage door is sagging, you can be pretty sure that the springs are no longer providing enough support. As well the obvious inconvenience of not being able to operate the door easily, there may also be a safety issue, since the door might become unstable. Loud noises, such as excruciating squeaks or grinding sounds when opening or closing the garage door can indicate that the springs are past their best. As can uneven movement: if your garage door jerks when opening or closing, the springs may be worn out. Such uneven movement can in turn put undue stress on the opener and other components. Finally, if your garage door is suddenly more difficult than usual to open or close, there may be a spring failure issue. The increased resistance is an indication that the springs are no longer able to support the weight of the door properly and are about to break.
Unless you’re a particularly well-qualified engineer, it’s best not to attempt to repair or replace faulty springs yourself. For quite obvious safety reasons and to ensure your garage door operates smoothly post-repair, do get the job done by experienced and qualified garage doors experts!
