Which Up & Over Garage Door?
Need a little help understanding which type of up and over garage door is most suitable for your property? No problem! Simply click the tabs below to get a little more information to help you make the right choice.
In the case of retractable up-and-over garage doors, a large proportion of the door swings outwards as it opens and then slides away into the ceiling of your garage. The pivot points are located at the top of the door.
Retractable up-and-over doors are straightforward to install: spring assemblies are fitted to the side-frames, whilst tracks support the top of the door. This is the easiest type of garage door to automate, too, as virtually any electric opener is compatible.
Security is generally pretty sound, with many models featuring four latches. When the door is automated, these factory-fitted latches are disabled, but in fact we’re able to fit an automatic latching system to ensure the continued security of your door.
Retractable up-and-over doors are available in the full range of materials: steel, timber, GRP and ABS. Pre-framed versions are available. If you want slightly more drive-through width to your garage, you might consider a canopy door.
Canopy up-and-over garage doors swing outwards, but less so than retractable doors. The canopy door then slides upwards into the ceiling of your garage, leaving one-third of the door protruding outside the garage, so that it takes up less space inside.
The pivot points are located two-thirds of the way down, which contributes substantially to the security of the door. Pre-framed versions are available.
Canopy up-and-over doors are easy to install, as the entire door mounts to the door frame and no tracks are required inside the garage. Automating a canopy door is not recommended – if automation is on your wish list, we recommend a retractable model.
Like the retractable doors, Canopy up-and-over doors are available in a selection of materials: steel, timber, GRP and ABS. When considering your options, it’s worth noting that with a canopy door the drive-through width is somewhat better than that possible with a retractable door.
